Meet the People Behind Your Cup
About ten years ago, our green coffee supplier, Genuine Origin, started a program in Guatemala called La Morena. The purpose of the program was simple and important: to help women coffee growers gain better access to the global coffee market.
It started small, with four female coffee growers who were members of the International Women’s Coffee Alliance. Those first coffees were received very well by roasters, and the program began to grow. Today, the La Morena Program includes around 800 women coffee growers, and the coffees produced through this program have become highly sought after by roasters around the world.
This is not the first time we have brought you coffees produced entirely by women. Some of you may remember La Hondureña from 2021 or Rwanda Kawa Yaku Peaberry
from 2024. Both were produced by women, and both were coffees many of you remembered long after they were gone.
About This Coffee
Guatemala is divided into 22 departments, which are similar to states here in the U.S. This coffee was grown in Baja Verapaz, in and around the municipality of Cubulco. The farms in this area sit at elevations between 5,249 and 5,905 feet above sea level.
This lot was washed processed, which means the coffee fruit was removed before the beans were dried. Washed coffees often give us a clean, bright cup that lets the character of the region come through clearly.
There are six coffee varieties in this lot: Catuai, Pache-San, Ramon, Sarchimor, Bourbon, and Caturra. That blend of varieties helps create a cup with depth, balance, and complexity, while still being very approachable.
What to Expect in Your Cup
This is a medium-bodied coffee with a smooth feel and a lively brightness. As you drink it, you may notice flavors that remind you of; Milk chocolate, Praline, Granola, and Green apple.
The green apple note gives the cup a little lift, while the milk chocolate, praline, and granola notes make it feel warm, familiar, and easy to enjoy.
Easy Food Pairings
This coffee pairs beautifully with foods you may already have in your kitchen. Try it with
apple slices, cheddar and crackers.
The apple highlights the bright note in the coffee, the cheddar brings a little creamy richness, and the crackers keep everything simple and balanced.
